On Friday night, I tossed and turned at midnight, one and 2AM until finally my body rose sometime after three. As I tossed and turned, a song streamed through my head from back when I was a kid, We Belong by Pat Benatar.
“Close your eyes and try to sleep now
Close your eyes and try to dream”
Toss, turn.
“We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder…
We belong, we belong, we belong together”
Anticipating the sound of my 4:30AM alarm, still tossing and turning, I pondered, Who’s the ‘we’ in ‘we belong together?’ and reminded myself that human relationships aren’t only with other people. We can also commune with nature, God, and — things.
Music is one of those things I say I cannot live without. Quite frankly, I don’t know how I’d find ecstasy without it.
As Life presents consistent opportunities to confront and heal fear and pain, there are things that can instantly bring freedom to a stressed state of mind. For me they are music, hiking up hills and being in the presence of a young child.
It's the Light. But what is that?
It can't be captured by words. I laugh, as a prolific writer since age five. So I'll stick with these definitions.
It's the jolt of enchanting wildness in the first few notes of a song I love.
It's the electrified glee in my thighs as I ascend a trail.
It's the precious purity in a child, an invitation to perfect reverence.
It is Light.
Thank you Life, for being an endless dance of invitations to lean into the Light that I Am. In Life, Light is freedom.
Why was I up so early? To catch a flight to Chicago and live out one of my big dreams — seeing Sting perform live tomorrow night!
And then, as life’s goodness would have it, again in San Francisco the night after the election. There are many spectacular ways to bracket an episode of fear-fueled insanity (like the US presidential elections). Saying yes to our dreams is one of them.
