Dear Darkness,
We see you. You are here, knocking nonstop on humanity’s door, louder than ever before. You are creating a state of terror we can all intensely feel.
Most of us are distraught that the systems we’re familiar with — the medical-military-industrial-educational-you-name-it-complex — are dying, gasping desperately with arduous exhales as we stand by, uncertain about what will replace them.
Some of us are afraid future journalists and humanitarians can’t go overseas because they might get shot for telling the truth and bringing food to starving children.
Some of us are giving our children instructions for what to do if we don’t come home because we were kidnapped by our own government when we were at work making money for our family.
Some of us wonder if our kids will ever have a world where their innocence is respected.
Some of us pray to a religious God, asking to be saved.
Some of us turn to the divine Light inside our hearts, bellies, wombs.
Finally, dear Darkness, we’re fully feeling you. We cannot hide from you anymore.
You have been with us all along. In recent centuries, years and weeks, you haven't grown bigger.
Women were raped 300 years ago.
Children were smacked by their own parents’ hands and left to “cry it out.”
We have slaughtered old growth trees and stolen land from native people for a very long time.
We simply see you more clearly now. More of us have our eyes open, with little computers in our pockets that readily reveal one living nightmare after another.
And yes, it feels terrible.
Pain hurts.
Seeing real life nightmares every day is an attack on our psyche and our nervous systems. You offer constant heartbreak.
Yet when we soften our gaze to actually fully feel your presence, we see that there is beauty here. Humanity is ready to wake up and see the Light. Our divinity, within.
That's why you are clear-as-day right now — to bring us together through the pain of our insistence on being divided.
If we weren't actually, deep down, ready to look at you right in the face, we wouldn't be seeing the agony we see today.
It is happening. One unfortunately-painful moment at a time, our collective insistence on suffering instead of leaning into Light is falling away.
One at a time, we are realizing that just as divine Light lives inside of us, you do too. Spending time focusing on how someone else is the problem — like “rude people” or our ex-wife or a deeply wounded, wannabe king who is our country’s president — is a choice to displace the power of our own loving presence.
You came to invite us to see through Love’s eyes. Not through fear’s. Fear stays in blame; Love takes responsibility.
While you ask, How much pain do you need to wake up?, ready to give us as much as we need…
Love asks the same question, as it opens its door to show us the streams of Light that shine through our very own selves, when we stop insisting on struggle.
Thank you for showing up.
May your visit be brief. May the degree of agony we see and feel today be enough for us to finally choose to be the change we wish to see tomorrow.
Love,
Jessica

While reading, yet another well-crafted letter of literary love that is Jess, with TSwift "Happiness" playing in the headphones, I am driven head-on into my certainty of our current country-wide-black-cloud-veil of greed and short-sightedness, where so many soulless individuals are choosing to feed the dark machine. But, as the author indicates, we know you, Darkness, will not be here for long because you do not belong here in such prevalence, taking up quite so much space. As that space may instead be filled with, love, understanding, and altruism.
Darkness is real, yes, and can be managed, and that is where the Heart of Happiness must be cultivated with deep determination.
Thank you, Jess, for the reminder today, that we shall overcome because when we believe we set the balance, that love can still be found through a quick-lens-flick, those who choose to be part of the shadow will only be revealed the more.
